SPIRITUAL MATURITY

MEMORY VERSE: “For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat”. Hebrews 5:12.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Ephesians 4: 11-14

11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:
14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; (KJV)

INTRODUCTION: After salvation, every believer is expected to begin the processof spiritual growth. Just like a baby grows from living on ordinary milk to some light solid meal and eventually to cracking real bones at adulthood, a Christian must grow from just taking the milk of the word to a spiritual bone-cracker. Spiritual maturity is achieved through becoming more like Jesus Christ.

OUTLINES:

1. THE PROCESS OF MATURITY
2. SIGNS OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY

THE PROCESS OF MATURITY

Spiritual maturity is an ongoing process that will never end in this life, Philippians 3:12-14. It requires a radical re-ordering of one’s priorities, changing over from pleasing self to pleasing God and learninq to obey Him. The key to maturity is consistency; perseverance in doing those things we know will bring us closer to God. These practices are referred to as spiritual disciplines. They include things such as Bible reading and study, prayer, fellowship, service, stewardship and ultimately the enabling of the Holy Spirit within us – Galatians 5:16. As we submit more and more to the control of the Holy Spirit, we will also see an increase in the fruit of the Spirit in our lives- Galatians 5:22-23, 2Peter1 :5-8.

It is very crucial to note that spiritual growth is the basis for ministry. The ministry gifts given to the church are to serve the purpose of maturing every believer in Christ – Ephesians 4: 11-14.

SIGNS OF SPIRITUAL MATURITY

Mature believers possess some of these indicators: An appetite for ‘strong meat’, i.e. love for deeper doctrines – Hebrews 5:12-14. Unyieldingness to personal offence, PhiI.1:15-18. A conscience informed by Scripture, not opinions – Romans 14:1-3. A sense of humility when used by God in ministry – 1Timothy 3:6, 2Corinthians 4:7. A tendency to give credit for spiritual growth to God, not people -1Corinthians 3:4-7.

CONCLUSION

1Corinthians 14:20 “Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men”. Ask for grace to grow to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.

QUESTIONS

1. Describe spiritual maturity.
2. What are the evidences of spiritual maturity?

LESSON ELEVEN: Sunday, 16th November 2014

THE SPIRITUAL CHRISTIAN

MEMORY VERSE: “This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. “ Galatians 5: 16

BIBLE PASSAGE: Romans 8: 1-6

1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.
3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh:
4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (KJV)

INTRODUCTION: The spiritual Christian is a believer who is living a Spirit-led lifestyle. His lifestyle was explained in Romans 8. It is not correct to have the Spirit of God living in you without having any effect on your lifestyle. Let us consider a few characteristics of the spiritual Christian.

OUTLINES:

1. CHARACTERISTICS OF A SPIRITUAL CHRISTIAN
2. MORE CHARACTERISTICS OF A SPIRITUAL CHRISTIAN

CHARACTERISTICS OF A SPIRITUAL CHRISTIAN

(1) He is free from condemnation. This implies he has self-assurance that God is pleased with his deeds. His heart is free from any form of condemnation either from self or from the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:1, Luke 6:37.

(2) He is free from the law. He is living in the liberty of Christ. He does not measure his righteousness by his obedience to rules and laws of the flesh. Romans 8:2, John 8:32

(3) He is led by the Spirit. All his deeds are based on the direction of the Holy Spirit and love. He can no longer live according to the old man’s desires. Galatians 5: 16, 18, Ephesians 5:2,15.

(4) He is mindful of spiritual things. His thoughts are more on the spiritual things, which help him to renew his mind after the word of God until he has the mind of Christ. Romans 8:5, Philippians 2:5.

MORE CHARACTERISTICS OF A SPIRITUAL CHRISTIAN

1. He has mortified the deeds of the flesh. The spiritual Christian willingly allows the taste, desires, and glories of the flesh to die by saying yes to the Spirit.Colossians 3:5-9, Galatians 5:20.

2. He lives as a son and not as a slave. This implies he has direct relationship with Christ as joint-heirs. Romans 8:14-16, Luke 8:21.

3. He bears the fruit of the Spirit. This is the only outward proof of spirituality. Galatians 5:22-23, Psalm 92:13-14.

4. He is divinely guided and has spiritual insight. He has a divine insight into all things hence he can judge correctly as the Spirit would have judged. He has access to the mind and thoughts of God on issues. 1Corinthians 2:15, 1Corinthians 2:10-13.

CONCLUSION

Becoming spiritual is Christ’s aim for the church. If we all strive to spiritual maturity, the bride of Christ will be found ready for His coming.

QUESTIONS

1. How is a spiritual Christian free from the law?
2. What is the law of the Spirit?

OVERCOMING CARNALITY

MEMORY VERSE: “Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.” Romans 8:37

BIBLE PASSAGE: Galatians 5: 16-18

16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.
17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh:and these are contrary the one to the other:so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. (KJV)

INTRODUCTION: It is possible to overcome carnality if we can take the neccessary steps towards that. However, there is the need for us to know how to overcome carnal life and the rewards for the overcomers.

OUTLINES:

1. HOW TO OVERCOME THE CARNAL LIFE
2. REWARDS FOR OVERCOMERS

HOW TO OVERCOME THE CARNAL LIFE

-Admit that carnality is a sin. So many carnal Christians excuse away this sin by claiming that it is their nature – 1Corinthians 11:31, 1Corinthians 5:1-2.
-Agree that living in obedience to the Spirit of God is possible. To live by the Holy Spirit is not a theory but practicable. Romans 7:18.
-Bear the fruit of the Spirit. This is the only outward proof of spirituality.
-Live a Spirit-led life – Galatians 5:22-23. Have divine insight Into all things.

REWARDS FOR OVERCOMERS

God did not ask His children to serve Him in vain. There are many rewards from God for those who overcome. These include:

– Crown of righteousness – 2Timothy 4:8.
– Grace to reign with Him – 2Timothy 2:12.
– Crown of life – James 1: 12.
– Rest from all labours – Revelations 4: 13.
– Access to eat from the tree of life- Revelations 2: 7.
– No hurt of the second death – Revelations 2: 11.
– Access to eat of the hidden manna and a new name – Revelations 2: 17.
– Power over the nations – Revelations 2:26.
– Clothed in white raiment and secured name in the book of life – Revelations 3:5.
– You will be made a pillar in God’s temple – Revelations 3:12.

CONCLUSION

You can overcome carnality by taking the necessary steps cited in this study. Above all, you can also enjoy all the rewards of the overcomers enumerated above if you take the necessary steps to overcome carnality.
