TEMPTATION – PART TWO

MEMORY VERSE: “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of
the world.” 1John 2:16

INTRODUCTION: We have so far discovered that temptation is an inducement to do what is evil. Though Satan is the ultimate tempter, God allows it to prove us.We shall, therefore, be learning some lessons from the experience of our Saviour and Lord, Jesus Christ, in order to discover how we can also overcome temptation.

LESSONS FROM THE TEMPTATION OF JESUS CHRIST

Much can be learnt from the account of Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness. Matthew 4: 1-11 reveals that Jesus was tempted on all three levels stated in 1John 2:15-17: the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life. This was the same means by which Satan tempted Eve (Genesis 3:6), and it is the same way he tries to make us fall today. This is what the Bible means when Hebrews 4:15 says that Jesus was in all points tempted like as we are. However, Jesus never yielded to temptation. He never sinned. John 8:29,14:30, 2Corinthians 5:21.

HOW CAN TEMPTATION BE OVERCOME?

In order to overcome temptation, a believer must have total trust in God and not in his strength, 1Samuel 2:9. By faith, he must resist Satan -1 Peter 5:9; 1John 5:4. He must take God by His Word and pray fervently, Matthew 6:13; Luke 22:40. He must also discern and abstain from every appearance of evil-1Thessalonians 5:22. In fighting temptation. it is important that the child of God recognizes exactly that “We are not ignorant of [Satan’s] devices.” 2Cormthlans 2:11. We do not fight “against flesh and blood” (things in the natural realm), “but against spiritual wickedness … ” Ephesians 6:12.

CONCLUSION

Satan deals most successfully in the realm of deception. Genesis 3:1; Matthew 4:3. The Savior triumphed over temptation and sin. You too can overcome, if you cry to Him for help.
