LESSON FIVE: Sunday 2nd October, 2016
THE PURSUIT OF GOD
Memory Verse: “Seek the LORD while He may be found, Call upon Him while He is near,” – Isaiah 55:6
BIBLE PASSAGE: 2Chronicles 15:2-4
2 And he went out to meet Asa, and said unto him, Hear ye me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin; The LORD is with you, while ye be with him; and if ye seek him, he will be found of you; but if ye forsake him, he will forsake you.
3 Now for a long season Israel hath been without the true God, and without a teaching priest, and without law.
4 But when they in their trouble did turn unto the LORD God of Israel, and sought him, he was found of them.
INTRODUCTION: To “seek” means to look for, search for, inquire about, investigate, pursue and strive after (Matthew 13:44-46). In Genesis 4:26, the Bible records that men began to seek God… “then began men to call upon the name of the LORD”. The call to seek the Lord is an urgent one. It is our prayer that in our pursuit of God, we shall find Him and also be found of Him in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
I. Why pursue God?
2. How to pursue Him
WHY PURSUE GOD?
God is not just available and accessible to His children, He is also near to them (Isaiah 50:2; 55:6; 59: I). To seek God is a command that must be obeyed (2Chroriicles 14:4). God will be found if we seek Him with all our heart (Jeremiah 29: I 1-14, I Chronicles 28:9). He will hear and answer us (2 Chronicles 7: 14). God will give us rest (Matthew 28:11; 2 Chronicles 14:7; 2Chronicles 14:10-15). God is the source of blessing, so we should seek Him (Matthew 6:33; Psalm 34:9-10). To be able to live righteously, we must seek God (Hosea 10: 12). God is the only hope of everlasting life (Titus I :2; John 5:39).
HOW TO PURSUE GOD
We should pursue the Lord with all our heart (Deuteronomy 4:29; Jeremiah 29: 13). He should be sought continually (Psalm 105:4; 1Chronicles 16:11). This should be daily (Isaiah 58:2). We should seek Him diligently (Hebrews 11 :6). We should do it with humility
(2 Chronicles 7: 14). We must realise that seeking the Lord is the source oflife (Amos 5:4).
Every true child of God must see the pursuit of his Father as an inevitable and highly rewarding task.
